Laser Birthmark Removal at DrBK Reading
Birthmarks are common skin markings that can vary in size, colour, and type—ranging from pigmented patches to vascular marks like port-wine stains. While many birthmarks are harmless, some individuals choose to have them treated for cosmetic reasons or if the mark changes over time.
At DrBK clinic, we offer advanced, non-invasive laser treatments designed to safely and effectively reduce the appearance of both pigmented and vascular birthmarks, helping to restore a more even, natural-looking skin tone with minimal discomfort and downtime.
The specific type of laser/treatment used will depend on the type and colour of the birthmark. This will be discussed in your consultation. Whether you’re seeking treatment for cosmetic reasons or due to changes in the birthmark’s appearance, our team of experts are here to guide you through a personalised plan tailored to your needs.
Types of Birthmarks
Pigmented Birthmarks
Pigmented birthmarks, caused by an overgrowth of pigment-producing cells (melanocytes), are common and usually harmless, ranging in colour from brown to black or bluish-grey.
Vascular Birthmarks
Unlike pigmented birthmarks, vascular birthmarks are not caused by an overgrowth of pigment-producing cells (melanocytes). They are instead caused by abnormal blood vessel development or growth and are therefore considered a vascular issue, so require different treatment protocol to pigmented birthmarks.
Common types of vascular birthmarks include ‘port-wine stains’, hemangiomas, capillary malformations etc.
Dye SR (IPL) Treatment for both Pigmented & Vascular Birthmarks
This laser treatment involves uses short bursts of high-intensity light to target the specific elements responsible for different types of birthmarks.
For pigmented birthmarks, the melanin absorbs the laser energy, breaking the pigment down into smaller particles that are naturally eliminated by the body, gradually causing the birthmark to fade.
For vascular birthmarks, the laser targets the blood vessels that create the red or pink colouring. The light is absorbed by the red pigment in the vessels, causing them to heat up and collapse. Over time, the body reabsorbs the treated vessels, resulting in a visible reduction or complete fading of the birthmark.

Laser Birthmark Removal FAQs
How does laser birthmark removal work?
Laser treatments target the pigment or blood vessels in the birthmark. For pigmented birthmarks, lasers break down excess melanin, allowing the body to naturally eliminate it. For vascular birthmarks, lasers collapse the abnormal blood vessels, leading to a fading of the mark.
Is the procedure safe?
Yes, laser birthmark removal is generally safe when performed by qualified professionals. At DrBK, treatments are conducted by experienced practitioners using advanced, non-invasive laser technologies.
How many sessions will I need?
Laser birthmark removal typically requires multiple sessions to achieve optimal results, with most patients needing between 4 and 6 treatments. The number of sessions can vary depending on the size, type, and depth of the birthmark, as well as individual skin characteristics. Treatments are usually spaced 6-8 weeks apart to allow the skin to heal.
How do I know which laser treatment is most suitable for me?
The specific type of laser/treatment used will depend on the type and colour of the birthmark. You will be assessed in your consultation and our team of experts will guide you through a personalised plan tailored to your needs.
Can all types of birthmarks be treated?
While many birthmarks can be effectively treated with laser therapy, a consultation is necessary to determine the suitability of the treatment for each individual case. Factors such as the type, colour, and location of the birthmark will influence treatment decisions.

At what age can birthmarks be treated?
Laser treatment can be performed on both children and adults, but the timing depends on the type and size of the birthmark, as well as individual skin sensitivity. Early treatment can sometimes yield better results, especially for vascular birthmarks.
Do birthmarks go away on their own?
Some birthmarks, like certain hemangiomas, may fade or shrink over time, especially in childhood. Others, such as port-wine stains or pigmented moles, are likely to persist or even darken with age if left untreated.
Can birthmarks come back after removal?
While many treated birthmarks do not return, there is always a possibility of recurrence depending on the type of birthmark and how it responds to treatment. Maintenance or follow-up sessions may be recommended in some cases.
