“Fixing my smile after my car crash”
An unfortunate car crash left Lorcan with broken teeth and a fractured face.
After being involved in a serious car crash at the start of 2020, Lorcan was left with a missing front tooth and the rest of his front teeth were severely chipped and broken.
“So it all started about a year and a half ago, I got in a car accident. I lost my tooth, destroyed all my front teeth, and then I had a really bad fractured bone.“
This would usually be a simple case of replacing the missing tooth and repairing the surface of the chipped teeth. Unfortunately for Lorcan, he had also suffered a severe fracture in his maxilla bone (the bone that forms the upper jaw). When this bone is damaged to the extent that Lorcan’s was, it becomes impossible to replace the missing tooth, as the replacement implant has no bone to be able to hold onto (see photo 2).
He was referred to DrBK where Dr Khanna began carefully planning his treatment.
The first step of Lorcan’s treatment was to restructure his bone. This is known as bone grafting. Bone grafting is a procedure that can encourage new bone growth to occur where it is needed to support an implant or to stabilise a tooth. Dr Khanna uses a bone material that is made from the mineral part of the bones originating from Australian cattle. The bone has a natural framework in which your body’s own cells enter and start to naturally rebuild.
After some time, Lorcan’s bone was strong enough to start tackling the missing tooth. This was done using a dental implant. The implant was placed into the bone and left to heal for a number of months, where it was then completed with a crown.
As mentioned previously, most of Lorcan’s front teeth were completely chipped and broken, so the final stage of his treatment included some cosmetic work to give him back his naturally straight smile. Dr Khanna did this with the use of composite bonding (a more cost-effective alternative to porcelain veneers), and finally some whitening to make sure they all match.
