Dental Bridge
Dental Bridge – For replacing one or more missing teeth
A dental bridge (sometimes referred to as a partial fixed denture) is much like that of a crown; it is a fixed, prosthetic device that is used to replace one or more missing teeth.
There are different types of dental bridges available, and the appropriate one for you will depend on your individual circumstances.
A dental bridge needs the support of natural teeth or supporting dental implants in order to work. They can come in a variety of colours, from gold to natural tooth coloured materials like ceramic or porcelain. Most people choose the natural tooth coloured option so that it matches their real teeth. The bridge is fixed on to your natural teeth either side using a strong dental cement. Implant-retained bridges will be fixed slightly differently but the end result is the same.

What does the treatment involve?
The treatment usually takes place over two separate appointments at our cosmetic dental clinic in Reading.
Within the first appointment the teeth either side will be prepared. This will involve carefully reducing the size of the natural tooth to accommodate the bridge to fit over the top, just like a crown. During the treatment, you will be given some local anaesthetic to ensure you are comfortable during the procedure. The first step will be slightly different if you have implants or need implants. If this is the case, please see our dental implant page for more information about the dental implant procedure.
Impressions (a mould) of your teeth are usually then taken in order to make your dental bridge. However, thanks to our 3D intra-oral scanner, we are able to easily create a 3D model of your teeth without the use of unpleasant impressions, by simply scanning your teeth! We will then discuss what shade would be most suitable for you.
Our lab technicians will then begin carefully crafting your bespoke bridge, and you will then come back for a second appointment in order to have the permanent bridge fitted. This is done using a strong dental cement.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if a dental bridge is suitable for me?
A bridge is suitable if you have one or more missing teeth. You will need to have a strong tooth or implant either side of the bridge to be able to support it. We will assess whether this is the best option for you, simply contact us and book a dental consultation.
Will I be given a temporary bridge in between appointments?
Yes, normally you would have a temporary bridge in place in between the two visits in which the bridge is being made in the lab. However some patients opt not to have a temporary if the bridge is located at the back of the mouth.
How long does a dental bridge last?
A bridge can last for many years, providing the natural teeth supporting the bridge are healthy. For this reason it is really important to maintain a good oral hygiene regime and keep up with regular dental health examinations.
